The Bill McLaren Foundation Volunteer Award
Peter Gallagher - Volunteer of the Year 2026
For many years, Peter has been a cornerstone of Scottish rugby, not only within his own club but across the wider rugby community at all levels. His commitment to the game extends far beyond match days or committee meetings; it lives in the relationships he builds, the guidance he gives, and the quiet example he sets for players, coaches and volunteers alike.
At Duns RFC, Peter has played a pivotal role in creating a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable environment for people of all ages to experience rugby. His approach reflects the core belief that rugby is not just a sport but a community. An environment where respect, teamwork, and good sportsmanship are valued above all. Players, opponents, officials, and supporters alike are treated with fairness and genuine care, a hallmark of Peter’s character and leadership.
Yet Peter’s influence stretches well beyond the boundaries of a single club. Through his deep connections across the game, his support of youth pathways, and his willingness to help any team or organisation in need, he has contributed to the growth of rugby participation throughout Scotland. His work has strengthened club networks, supported volunteers, and helped foster the sense of shared purpose that keeps grassroots rugby thriving.
One of Peter’s most remarkable contributions came more than half a century ago. In 1972, he was one of five pioneers who helped create Minis Rugby - a development that has shaped the early playing experience for thousands of young players and established a vital pathway into the sport. That legacy continues to benefit generations of young athletes discovering rugby for the first time.
In a sport built on respect, community, and lifelong passion, few volunteers embody the spirit of rugby quite like Peter Gallagher. The Foundation's Volunteer of the Year Award celebrates individuals whose dedication reflects the values of the legendary 'Voice of Rugby', Bill McLaren - values of integrity, humility, and an unwavering love for the game. This year’s recipient, Peter Gallagher of Duns RFC, represents those ideals in every sense.
Peter’s commitment to the game has never waned. Even decades later, he continues to demonstrate the same enthusiasm and resilience that have defined his rugby life. In 2023, at the age of 80, he took part in the Doddie 88 Challenge, showing the same determination and passion that have characterised his lifelong involvement in the sport.
Today, Peter remains actively involved as both a coach and committee member at Duns RFC. His willingness to embrace change - whether supporting modern coaching approaches, promoting safeguarding and welfare standards, or encouraging innovation within the club - shows his belief that rugby must continue to evolve while staying true to its core values.
Like Bill McLaren himself, who served the game as a teacher, coach, supporter, and ambassador, Peter Gallagher has devoted his life to strengthening rugby at every level. His ability to bring people together, build trust, and nurture the next generation reflects the very best of the sport’s traditions.
For his decades of service, his pioneering contributions, and his enduring commitment to grassroots rugby, Peter Gallagher stands as a truly worthy recipient of the Bill McLaren Foundation Volunteer of the Year Award. His story is not only one of dedication, but of the lasting difference one volunteer can make to a club, a community, and the game of rugby across Scotland.
