Spotlight on success: Abbie Potts
Abbie Potts - 2025 BMF Grant Recipient
We recently caught up with Abbie Potts, who spoke about the transformative impact that support from the Bill McLaren Foundation has had after receiving a grant to purchase a specialist rugby wheelchair.
Reflecting on the past year, Abbie shared: “Being able to access a properly fitted rugby chair has completely changed how I train and compete.”
Since receiving the grant, Abbie has gone on to play at premiership level with the North East Barbarians - part of Newcastle Wheelchair Rugby Club - something she describes as one of her proudest achievements. The club continues to grow wheelchair rugby opportunities across the North East, running adult, junior and women’s programmes while competing nationally in Wheelchair Rugby 5s competitions.
“Having the right chair allowed me to fully perform, contribute in matches, and feel confident on court. It was a big milestone for me.”
The North East Barbarians have enjoyed continued progress in recent seasons, including competing in the Wheelchair Rugby 5s Premiership and building one of the most ambitious and inclusive wheelchair rugby programmes in the region.
Abbie also highlighted the wider importance of foundations supporting disabled athletes and helping remove barriers to participation in sport.
“Receiving support from The Bill McLaren Foundation represents belief not just in my ability as an athlete, but in what’s possible for disabled people in sport…Specialist equipment can be a huge barrier, and without that support, many individuals wouldn’t be able to take part or progress in their sport.”
The Bill McLaren Foundation is proud to support athletes like Abbie; pursuing their sporting ambitions, competing at the highest level, and inspiring others through their achievements.
