Spotlight on success: Leith Rugby

Kids enjoying rugby coaching at Leith

When Leith Rugby launched its youth programme in 2015, just six children turned up. Today, nearly 2,500 local children are involved in a thriving rugby development programme in the Leith community! Behind that remarkable growth stands a long-standing partnership with The Bill McLaren Foundation.

For almost eight years, the Foundation has supported Leith Rugby's youth development work, helping to establish and grow rugby opportunities in an area where football has traditionally dominated the sporting landscape. One of the most exciting developments has been the continued expansion of Leith Rugby's girls' programme, particularly at Under-14 level.

With funding from the Foundation, the club has been able to strengthen its youth offering and provide dedicated, professional coaching to young players. The result has been a vibrant and diverse group of girls successfully making the transition from primary school rugby and competing confidently in local and regional competitions.

The grants have helped ensure that more young people than ever before have access to high-quality rugby experiences, regardless of background.

The impact of the programme extends far beyond 'just' rugby skills. One inspiring example is a senior pupil from Leith Academy who has been involved with the youth programme for the past eight years and was given a Scottish Rugby Volunteer Recognition Award for his outstanding service to the club.

He has also been encouraged and supported to pursue rugby refereeing qualifications. Today, he regularly officiates senior 2nd XV matches and youth fixtures across the local area, becoming a role model for younger players and demonstrating the pathways that community sport can create.

For Leith Rugby, the Foundation's support has never simply been about funding equipment or coaching sessions. It has been about creating opportunities, building confidence and helping young people develop positive values that will stay with them for life.

Russell Duncan, Treasurer of Leith Rugby, says the support has enabled the club to establish youth rugby where previously there were few opportunities available, while also delivering significant health and wellbeing benefits for local children - parents and schools have consistently highlighted the positive impact the programme has had on participants.

Stories like Leith Rugby's demonstrate the lasting impact that investment in grassroots sport can have. From six young players to a programme reaching nearly 2,500 children, this is a powerful example of what can happen when communities are given the opportunity to thrive.

The Bill McLaren Foundation is proud to support Leith Rugby - helping young people discover the benefits of sport, build confidence and create brighter futures.
